5 Steps From Negative to Positive Thoughts

May 29, 2019

Feeling like you can't shake the negative thoughts you have about yourself? You're not alone.

We tend to stay in our old negative ways because it's what we know. Change may not seem possible or difficult. We believe the lies we've been telling ourselves all this time.

Here's the thing, change is hard, but it's worth it.

At the end of the day, isn't living in this negativity hard too?

#1 Be a aware of your thoughts

When those negative thoughts start creeping in, remind yourself that's not who you are. Those negative thoughts do not apply to you. If you're a Christian, remember that God would never talk to you that way and if you're a parent think about what you would tell your own child if they said these things about themselves

#2 Watch our for your triggers

For now on, when you start to think negatively, I want you to take a moment and think about what's going on around you. Where are you, who are you with, what are doing, watching, listening to?

Start making a note of it so you can become more aware of what's putting these thoughts in motion. Once you start realizing your triggers, make the effort to distance yourself. Prepare your mind with positive self talk, when you know you will be faced with these situations.

#3 Take care of yourself

Taking care of ourselves is huge for having a positive mindset! I'm not saying you need to sign up for a 5k. Just take baby steps to a healthier you. Drink more water. Move a little each day. Cut out that midnight snack. The more you take care of you, the better you will feel, the more you will want to take care of you, and your thoughts naturally begin to move towards a more positive mindset.

#4 Notice what you're taking in

Pay attention to what you are listening to, reading, and watching. I stay close to books and music that lift me up. I also love a good podcast, there's tons out there. What are you watching? Who are you hanging out with? Are they lifting you up or are they keeping you where you are?

#5 Start digging a little deeper

Start asking yourself questions when these negative thoughts come around.

Examples:

What makes me think.....?

What truth backs this thought up?

What do I want this to look like?

How can I start to change it.

Change doesn't happen overnight. It takes time and commitment, but aren't you worth it? Don't you want to see what you're capable of? Don't you want to look back a year from now and be able to see how far you've come? Don't quit on yourself. Make the commitment to change your brain and take care of you.
