The Ultimate Formula For Spiritual Growth

If you know anything about me, you may know I wasn’t raised in church. I actually didn’t start going until I was an adult. I was terrified. I didn’t think I belonged. And I had no clue where to start.

Even after I started going to church, I felt like I was doing it all wrong. I constantly compared myself and my marriage to others. I stressed over wanting to know God the way other women knew Him. I wanted to understand the lingo going on around me. I felt like I no longer fully fit in with my friends but I also didn’t fully fit in with these new ladies I was meeting. It was all so overwhelming.

Eventually God showed me that my relationship with Him was just that…..

MY relationship with Him. It wasn’t SUPPOSED to look like anyone else’s.

I learned to develop my time with God based on MY family dynamics and season of life. I learned to study the way I could learn and understand His word. I started serving where I was comfortable.

Hear this please----There is no right or wrong way to get to know God. It’s a relationship that builds and grows just like all relationships, by spending time together and getting to know one another. It’s seeking Him and aligning your plans to His (Which starts to happen naturally, don’t worry.)

One area people tend to get stuck in is not knowing what to pray for.

So, why is spiritual growth essential: Getting to know God better allows you to…

Understand His word, hear His voice and apply it to your life. It helps you uncover all the possibilities He has for you, follow the path He’s set, and glorify Him throughout.

“But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity.” 2 Peter 3:18

The Ultimate Formula: Side note, don't get overwhelmed, just take one step at a time.

  • Make your spiritual growth a priority: Pick a time and place that works for you each day. It doesn’t have to take hours on end, just do what YOU can do in YOUR current season, but make the effort to do it daily.

  • Get in Gods word: The Bible, devotionals, join a small group, bible study….whatever helps YOU learn and grow. Studying the word of God is necessary for your spiritual growth. I started with devotionals and bible studies and now I just love sitting and reading and studying my bible.

  • Pray: Inviting God into conversation is an opportunity for you and Him to talk AND listen to one another. He wants to know what’s going on with you, He wants you to share with Him, but it’s also an amazing opportunity for you to listen and learn His voice. It reduces anxiety and brings you peace. Praying is something you can do anywhere & anytime.

  • Journal: Write down what’s going on in your life, what you’re learning as you read, and study, and pray. Prayer requests and how you see them answered….

  • Find community: Church, serving, small groups, bible study groups…God calls us to be in fellowship with others. This is important for our spiritual growth. It helps you make Jesus loving friends to pray for and with, discuss what you’re learning, ask each other questions. Turn to each other for Christ-centered guidance.

  • Serve: Serve in your church, in your community, friends, neighbors…. God calls us to love and serve others. It could be as big as spending the day serving a shelter or a small as mailing a note to a friend. Look for opportunities to serve others.

  • Ask questions: Don’t be afraid and don’t be intimidated. Part of growing is learning and part of learning is asking questions.

  • Don’t stop: Keep digging deeper. Keep growing! Your faith is ALWAYS growing, fuel it! The more you apply these steps, the better you hear Gods voice, the more you understand what He wants for your life, the more you grow, and the more content you become with where He has you.

Don't try and do all the things at once. Start with one area and then add more as you get comfortable and consistent. And remember sticking with God is easy when things are going good, it’s when you hit a tough time that it gets harder. Show yourself grace. Life gets crazy so respect your season of life and do what you can do, but make the effort to be consistent. You might not notice a difference the first day or even the tenth day, but over time you will see and feel it.

As someone who has lived life both without God and with Him, I can honestly say, life with Him is incredibly freeing. I still have bad days and disappointments, but He carries me through. He gives me guidance, strength, and He comforts me. I’m content with what I have and enjoy my daily blessings.

“For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.”

Philippians 2:13
